Since we’re kicking off a new month today, I thought I’d share my (fitness) goals for the month of June 2015:
- Run 197 kms (~122 miles)
- Run a test of seven rounds of Yasso 800s at a 5:00 pace (4 minutes)
- Do one unassisted chin-up (I’m close on this one!)
- Do one unassisted pull-up (I’m not close on this one!)
- Complete 20 consecutive (no rest!) full push-ups with good form
- Complete IT band exercise series at least 8 times (twice a week)
The total distance is straight from my training plan, including long runs of 21k, 23k, 25k, and 26k (with a de-load week of 15k after the 25k week) so I’m not too worried about this as long as I keep feeling the way I am (which is great! :))
I’ve integrated a few test rounds of Yasso 800s as a different form of speed training in my plan. Toward the end of the month I will run seven rounds (you’re supposed to do ten but that’s more distance than I want for right now). Starting with four loops around the track (1.6k) to warm up, then 800m at target marathon time (e.g. 4:00 minutes for a 4:00 hour marathon) and then 400m recovery. The 800-400 cycle is repeated up to ten times. I’ll be doing seven, which will put me at about 10k for the session.
The chin-ups and pull-ups are mixed. I find chin-ups to be significantly easier than pull-ups, so I’m confident I can meet this goal. As for the pull-ups… I’ll keep working on it.
The push-ups are in the middle. I can do them with good form, I can do 20, and I can do them without resting. At this time, all three of those things do not happen at the same time. So that’s a goal.
Lastly, my damned IT band and core exercises. I KNOW how important it is that I keep up with these. I even have them in my calendar so I get a reminder about an hour after dinner so there’s really no excuse to skip them. But I do. Almost every time. Is it a willpower thing? Like multiple desserts? Why is it so easy to amble over to the fridge for another coconut berry bar (or spoonful(s) of Haagen Dazs ice cream – not sorry!) but so difficult to spend 15 minutes doing a handful of exercises that could prevent me from doing what I love? Hmmmm, I need to think about better ways to manage this. I’ll let you know if I come up with a 100% guaranteed successful solution – don’t hold your breath 🙂
Another goal, non-fitness-related, is to keep up with my blogging. I’m having a lot more fun pouring my brain out onto this site than I thought I would, and I’m about a month in already, so I want to keep the momentum going!
