It’s Five things Friday time again!
Here are five of my favourite things from the past week:
It has been so incredibly beautiful around here and I’ve really been trying to take advantage of it. It’s gotten a little cooler now, but I still feel like we’ve broken winter for the year 🙂
Fun fact: Edmonton is one of the sunniest cities in Canada (second only to Calgary) with an average of 2,299 hours of sunshine (321 days of sun) a year! However, sunny days in winter tend to feel a lot colder than cloudy days so this is a double-edged sword.
Awesome visual remix of Shake it Off.
From the description: 49 University of Newcastle Australia animation students were each given 52 frames of Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off music video, and together they produced 2767 frames of lovingly hand-drawn rotoscoped animation footage.
Canada geese. Enough said.
Books (Golden Son) and audiobooks (Off to be the Wizard & Cinder)
Golden Son by Pierce Brown, is the second book in the Red Rising Trilogy. I enjoyed Red Rising when I read it, but that was a few months ago so it took me a bit to remember who most of the character were. Overall I enjoyed this one as well, though it ends on a pretty major cliffhanger and the next installment isn’t due out for almost a year.
The series is YA (note: some of it is pretty gruesome, so I’d say it’s more aimed at the older teen bracket) dystopia like a lot of what I’ve been reading lately, and focuses on a strictly heirarchical society where everyone is bred and classed by color. Darrow is from the lowliest caste, the Low Reds, but is recruited to infiltrate and take down the pinnacle race, the Golds. I like that the female characters are on par with the male characters in terms of ingenuity, self-awareness and personality. Even the main love interest doesn’t feel like she was just stuffed into the storyline for that purpose alone, so even though the main character is male, there are enough fierce chicks in there to make it relatable 🙂
I listened to Off to be the Wizard by Scott Meyer (creator of the basic instructions comic) as an audiobook during runs. It’s a fun, dense (as in compact and quickly paced) book about a man named Martin Banks from 2014 who discovers that the world and everything in it are simply constructs in a data file he finds on the web. He learns to manipulate the file, gets in trouble with the Treasury Department, and ends up back in medieval England impersonating a wizard (because he can manipulate things using the file, you see). However, he quickly finds out that he is not the first to have discovered the file nor been forced to escape to become a wizard in historical times. Though most of the women go to Atlantis.
There is a definite Monty Python feel here, and lots of pop culture references (including Monty Python), so if you’re into computers, wizards, or Monty Python this is a good one.
As a note, I get most of the books and audiobooks I read/listen to from the Edmonton Public Library, but I actually paid for this one on Amazon since the library didn’t have it. I plan to pay for the other two as well, if that gives you any indication of my enjoyment level. Also, I’m pretty sure Martin goes to Atlantis in the next one, so that should be interesting.
It’s a cute concept and the story is interesting enough, but it’s definitely skewed toward a younger crowd and I don’t particularly care for the narrator. I have the two subsequent audiobooks (Scarlet and Cress) in the queue, but the narrator is the same for all of them so I think it’s time to move on to something different.
No-bake coconut blueberry bars.
I made these delicious bars on a whim while I was sneaking a spoonful of coconut butter right from the jar and they turned out great. I’ll post the recipe next week!
That wraps up this week! Have a great weekend and come on by to check out part 2 of my story on what I did to train for the 2014 NYC marathon (Part 1 is here).
I’m running in the Run Wild for Wildlife 7k this Sunday, which should be a lot of fun. The weather looks like it’s going to be beautiful which will be a nice change from the cool, rainy weather I’ve had at other recent races! C’s not joining me on this one (boooo), but I will be rocking another set of my brand new pro compression grab bag socks. I’ll post a recap of the race on Monday.
Have a wonderful weekend!
