This week in the ABC Challenge: I is for Ice cream
I don’t do a lot of free-hand nail art, mostly because I can never get it to look “clean”. But I think the sketchy look works with this design, since it’s a little cartoony anyway.
Once again I made a short video showing the process – no narration this time as I’ve had a terrible summer cold with a bad cough that has basically shredded my voice.
I started with some soft, creamy colours.
I originally was going to do these as decals on my “mat” (which is just a standard paper protector with a page in side printed with blank nails) so I did a test run.
I thought they turned out pretty well and were fairly easy but these were way too small to use as decals. I decided instead to just bite the bullet and replicate them right on my nails.
Obviously, painting on a flat surface is much different than directly on your nail. Also, the different background colors changed the look of some of them. For example, my middle finger was initially supposed to be strawberry ice cream with chocolate fudge. It ended up looking more like vanilla, but vanilla with fudge is a classic so it’s all good 🙂
After I was done painting the designs I decided that they looked a little washed out and needed something to help them pop out against the background. Acknowledging my weak art game, I decided to try using a super-fine ink pen to outline.
It was pretty scary putting that final matte topcoat over the ink as it never really dried. I was sure it was just going to drag the pen and ruin everything. Surprisingly it was okay – I used a really light touch on the first coat and then applied a second layer of the top coat to catch any missed shiny spots.
Even with the pen my lines are definitely shaky, so I know it was a better choice than trying to paint with polish or acrylic paint. The ink smeared a bit before I put the top coat on, so the drag you see here is from that rather than the top coat application itself.
All in all, this isn’t my usual style but it’s always good to step outside your comfort and style zone. That’s one of the things I really love about this challenge – I don’t think I ever would have tried this without it and that’s really amazing 🙂
